On Tuesday morning before I went to school, I saw a kitten stuck on the roof of my neighbour's house and I couldn't stop thinking about it since then.
I was extremely worried for it because I had been hearing it mew incessantly for a few days before that. It probably had been there all this time and I was so worried. Like where's the mother cat? Why is it all alone and how did it get up there? Has it eaten anything at all for the past few days? My mind was just preoccupied with the kitten and all these thoughts I couldn't even concentrate in lectures and tutorials.
Tuesday, my mom said she never saw any mother cat throughout the day when I was in school. When I got home on Tuesday, I climbed onto the bed in the study room, peeked out the window facing the roof where the kitten usually stayed. Sometimes it went away, along the row of roofs. If the kitten was there, I would sit there and observe it for some time, looking out for any signs of injury or fatigue. Thankfully there was none.
Wednesday was my long day in school because I had GP mock papers all the way till 6plus. Why this Wednesday of all other Wednesdays?? I really wished I could have gone home straight because I usually end at 12.50pm. During my lunch break, I called home to ask my mom about the kitten. She said she hasn't seen it. I was worried sick and assumed the kitten probably hasn't eaten for days. After my GP papers, I made a stop by Pet Safari at Nex to buy a small can of cat food even though it would be impossible to give it to the kitten. But just in case. At night, I heard its calls again. And I was glad it was back at the same roof, still alive and safe.
My mom told me she didn't see the kitten on the roof while I was in school on Thursday as well. When I was home in the afternoon, I started hearing the sounds of two kittens and one adult cat. I looked out of the window and saw the little white kitten walking along the roof. I looked down at the drain and saw, very much to my excitement, a mother cat with another kitten! That must be Roof Kitty's mother and sibling! I watched the mother groom its kitten and let it suckle her while Roof Kitty mewed non-stop, calling for its mommy. The mother and kit walked down the drain and I couldn't see or hear them anymore. I anticipated the mother to jump onto the roof and feed Roof Kitty or something but she didn't. I didn't see her again. Roof Kitty, still mewing, walked back to the usual roof and it was like how I had observed the previous times. It remained pretty quite for the rest of the day.
Around 1am, as I was preparing to go sleep, I decided to check on Roof Kitty again. Roof Kitty's mainly white fur made it relatively easy to spot in the darkness and there it was on the roof, mewing again. Very soon I heard the mother cat and second kitten's calls as well. Roof Kitty was pacing the edge of the roof, wanting to jump down but knowing it is too high to jump. This continued for quite awhile and I was still waiting, wishing, hoping for the mother to reunite with Roof Kitty.
Finally, I saw the mother cat jump up along the wall and onto the roof. The tabby silhouette of the mother and the white ball of Roof Kitty together at last. I happily texted Claudia about it, as she's the one I've been seeking advice/help from. I was so relieved that Roof Kitty was not abandoned and starving after all! When I looked out the window again, they were gone and the night was quiet once more.
For the first time since the day I saw Roof Kitty, I was able to go to sleep with a peaceful mind that night.
It's been two days since then and it has been quiet without the mews or sight of Roof Kitty. It's a good thing. But I did hear kittens from the drain this evening. So I can safely say that Roof Kitty has been reunited with its mother and sibling, hidden safely at the drain.
It still puzzles me though, why one kitten would be on the roof while the other was down at the drain. And if Roof Kitty was stuck on the roof, why didn't the mother bring it down until so many days later? And how did Roof Kitty get up there in the first place?
I guess these are mysteries that will remain unsolved.
